How Do Keurig Coffee Disks Work?

by TheGroundBean on May 1, 2012

There is nothing more popular than the new breed of home coffee makers, known as the one cup coffee machines. The most popular right now is the Keurig machine. I love the Keurig because of the selection of coffee including Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks. But nothing beats the fresh cup every time.

So how does this one cup serving work?

So you better understand the process, you can see the diagram above.

  1. Each disk is sealed air tight, the disk is placed in the Keurig machine. Once the disk (K-Cup as it’s called) is inserted a whole is made on the top and bottom.
  2. Hot pressurized water is pushed through the K-Cup. Each disk is packed with one cup of fresh coffee and is brewed through the k-cups internal filter.
  3. The end result is the freshest cup of coffee.

K-Cups run about .65 each depending on the brand, Starbucks running a little more. The Keurig brews coffee, tea, hot chocolate, as well as a few other speciality drinks.
